Standard 90g -> 93g square (30x30x24)- lighting & live stock advice
I am moving about 7 hours away and figured I would set up a new tank at my new place, move my stuff and then sell the old tank. I was going to bring about 1/3 of my LR to and let it recycle if needed so when the rest of my corals and fish come, there will be a minimal cycle. I am going to be renting an apartment for a few years before I probably buy a house so I don't want to go too big right now. I always liked squares/cubes, so I have decided on the perfecto 30x30x24 93g.
1.) Will my current fish stock be ok? Mainly concerned about my Yellow tang. 2x occelaris clowns. breeding pair of Bangaii cardinals Large lawnmower blenny Male McCosker's wrasse Potter's Angel Yellow Tang -I have had the yellow tang for 2 years and he doesn't seem to have grown much. He's maybe 5" head to tail? I thought they got bigger but mine has done much in the 2 years I have had him. 2.) What should I do about lighting? I am going to probably sell my 6x54w ATI sunpower and use that money to buy a new light. I don't know if I want to go with T-5's on a short tank due to the price of bulb replacement. I keep SPS, zoas, ricordea and a few LPS. I was thinking either a 250w or 400w MH but the power consumption and heat might be an issue. Also, I was thinking about going with LED's. DIY is not out of the question and some of evil66's spots light are not out either(like 5 of them?.) I don't want to spend and arm and a leg on some of the existing LED setups. Any opinions on those Chinese maxspect (?) lights? Thoughts would be nice and if anyone has this or the 70g version please tell me your experience/ lighting setup. Pics wouldn't hurt too -The end. |

I plan on the 70 gallon version. The tang police will attack you, but it should be fine in there. I am planning either LEDs or the LIFI plasma bulb.

I am building the same size tank. I think the tang will be fine.
I just ordered a Lumen Bright 3 large pendant, i'll be using an ARO eballast and 20k Radium 250w bulb. I'm also going from a 6x54w T5 fixture. I plan to eventually switch to a Geissman or Sfigoli with MH and T5. The Lumen Bright should cover the entire footprint of the tank, although the edges will be less light. Obviously lower light corals will be placed a the edges.

What size tank is the tang in now? By it not growing in 2 years I'm going to guess it's already in a tank that's too small for it. Yellow tangs can get big...8 inches is a big fish. And if you are 'worried' about the small tank size with the tang, then you already know that it's going to be too small of a tank. 30"x30" is a bad footprint for a big swimmer. |

Its in a standard 90 now... 48x18x24. My brother has the same issue with his tang. hasnt grown bigger than 6" and his tank is a custom 60x24x24. My tang is happy in my 90 now. I'm thinking it will be fine, but would like some other opinions. It usually spends its entire time picking at rocks so I don't see why it would be a problem if its going to have a slightly larger area (LxW)

I have the same tank and I am running a large lumenbright pendent with a lumatek ballast and a 20k radium bulb. The reason I went with lumatek ballast is because I can set it as low as 250W, 250WHQI, 400W, 400WHQI. I love this tank and I think the lighting is perfect for it.
If I had the money at the time, I would have gone with a 8X24W ATI or 10X24 ATI. But now I have the radium, I don't regret my choice at all. Here is my build thread http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=1780539 |

I'm thinking of going with LEDs
I think a 400w MH is going to put out too much heat and use too much energy. |
