Thumbs down I just found a mantis shrimp in my tank...

I just found him carrying off another dead crab in his front claws into a hole in my LR. That explains the series of multiple clicks I hear every now and then.

I also have a de-shelled half eaten hermit too.

I need to get this thing out, pronto.

Well that was easy. Filled a bucket with plain tap water and craptons of marine salt. Set the huge piece of LR in the bucket and within a minute this little jerk was swimmin' around trying to jump out of the bucket.

I have him in a ziplock with a little of the normal tank water in it, so Im not sure how long he'll last to be honest. Don't know if the hypersalinity (is that the right word?) did any permanent damage.

Here's some pics:

Congratulations on an easy removal. I went through hell with a stone crab a few years ago.

I got some closeups. I put him in an old beta fish tank I had laying around. He seems to be fond of perching in the plastic trees.

Looks like he's got greens and pinks on him... he's a little prettier than I thought.

Nope, the other stuff I got. The stuff that also had the weird red lumpy thing on it. Either way, not sure what to do with him. I have no idea how big he's going to get since there's apparently a ton of different kinds of mantis shrimp...

If you're referring to me taking pictures of the mantis-- he was alive for all of them, and is still very much alive. Also, mantis shrimp make popping/clicking sounds just like pistol shrimp. Here is an excerpt for you to read:

* A lot of people seem to be confused about this. Pistol shrimps, which are "generally" viewed as non-harmful to most inhabitants of the tank, can and do make these clicking noises using one of their enlarged, specialized claws. Mantis shrimps cannot by themselves produce such noises. However, they can and do produce clicking noises whenever they use their raptorial appendages to hammer something hard, whether it be the armored shell of some luckless crab or mollusk, or the walls of their cavities. I have read somewheres that one way to tell from the clicking noises is that pistol shrimps tend to snap in ones and twos, whereas mantis shrimps make rapid multiple hits.
* The point here is that clicking noises don't prove anything. However, in conjunction with the continued loss of inhabitants, and the lack of any other viable culprit, you can probably assume that you do have a mantis problem.

The popping in my tank was always in groups like "taptaptaptaptap". If you watch youtube videos of mantis shrimp, they make those sounds as they punch their prey.

Pretty cool pictures!

Mantis are sweet...as long as they're not in my tank.

He's cool, you should get a little 5 gallon for him. I bet it would be really cool to see him go after some feeder shrimp and stuff

If anyone wants him, I'd be willing to trade him for some soft coral frags or a cleaner shrimp.

Just let me know!

I already got 2 that make babies, so I'm set.

But they do make cool pets (species tank) and need very little maintenance and low light (room lighting is sufficient).
