Anyone know about mini brittle stars?
I've seen the hitchhikers guide to the brittle stars but don't really see anything specifically about the little white 1" ministars:
http://www.ipsf.com/ministars.html genus and species name perhaps? Any natural history on these guys? I would like to get some of these for my tank as I've heard they are decent as part of a clean up crew..and I just like brittle stars...but I don't want something that gets huge...which is where these fit in. However, I feel it is just wrong to add anything without AT LEAST knowing a species name if possible..... |

they are Asterina Stars - you can probably buy them online, but all of mine have come in on LR that i have acquired over the years. Their population will change according to bioload in the tank. They seem to be pretty much self limiting that way.

I ordered live sand from Tampa Bay Saltwater and it contained a ton of those little guys. White and about 1 inch in size. I occasionally see one or 2 on the glass or rocks but that is about it. I have been searching for info on them and was kinda hoping to pickup some more.

Will they battle with bristle worms for food, etc? Will the bristle worms kill them?

The stars from IPSF deffinitely are not asterina stars. I don't know much more about them other than the fact that they have some youtube videos up of the little stars in a tupperware container. You could always ask the owner that question. He has always been super helpful and quick to respond IME.

Asterina stars and the tiny brittle stars are different things. Asterina stars are the white coloured tiny "regular" stars. Brittle stars has thin, flexible, mobile and worm like legs, much like the brittle stars sold except that they are tiny.
Neither will and can fight with anything, I doubt bristle worm would eat them if they are healthy. |

Yes, I am not interested in the tiny Asterina stars....I am specifically asking about the BRITTLE stars....I'd love to find out some more info, or at least a genus/species name for them....

I got a couple of these microbrittles on a coral I bought a few years back, now I've got dozens. Biggest I've seen in my tank is no more then a couple of inches across (if that). Nice addition to the cleanup crew. Never bothered anything in the tank, and never been bothered by anything in the tank.

I used to have tonnes of them, but flatworm exit wiped them out. I tried to save a few and tossed them to my display but they are never seen again in my tank.

I bought three mini bristle stars when i bought something last year which i cant recall what it was(old age) anyway i put the trhee in my fuge last july. Right now i would have to say there must be atleast 100 or more in there now. they are everywhere. they become visible whjen i feed Zoplan. There is in fact so many that i pulled out a marco rock out of that tank 2 months ago and put it in a biocube, now there is quite a few in there. Buy them they are great.
