Refugium
Does the refugium need to come before the deep sand bed. i have 180 gallon w a 55 gallon sump. the sump has a glass divider and it is about 1/3 of the tank. In this portion, i have created a deep sand bed. The water then over flows into the main body of the sump where the protein skimmer is, then onto the return pumps.
I want to create a refugium next to my sump. Do i need to plumb in the main water from the 180 gallon or does refugium need to be last in water cycle? |

I think the most common is skimmer fuge return why dont you just make your fuge out of the deep sandbed most people use sand in thier fuge

Well, i thought about it but when i read an in depth article in a book, it said not to light the dsb, in order to not cause problems in the deep sand bed. I also have a lot of water movement in the dsb. I wanted to create the fuge to harbor clams, seahorses and Pods. I already have a old wed/dry box that i have converted to create my fuge separate and next to the tank.

I'm not sure what problems you would have with light over a dsb, but many, many people have dsb's in their display tanks and have intense lighting over them with no problems.

I have 100 pounds of mud in my fuge. Its covered up with 150 pounds of live sand. I have some live rock rubble over the top of that. I have over 4000GPH going through my fuge with no issues of sand being kicked up into the water column. I have a diamond goby keeping my sand nice and clean in the fuge. My only gripe with my setup is that my water is only around 8" deep after the 4-5" of sand and mud.
I started out with a 12"x6" blob of cheato 30 days ago. My chaeto has grown well of 10x its original size in the month or so that this fuge has been running but it would have been nice to have a deeper space for the chaeto as it seems to collect things at the waters surface. It appears to be workiing well though. I pulled out a pile of chaeto from my fuge this weekend that was well over 5x the original piles size and still had enough left in my 30"x36" fuge to cover it from end to end.
