Chromis Flip-Out

My sister got me some blue green Chrmois for the tank and have a question. Every time I turn off the lights in the tank they kinda go crazy. Darting all around the tank for about 5 minutes and then they will go to a corner and stop moving till the morning comes. Also they seem to lose all color when this happens as well.

Is this normal?

chromis are weird fish. Mine showed similar behavior to this. Also, groups of chromis tend to pick each other off until there is only one left. This happened to both my friend (5 chromis in a 65 gallon) and myself (3 chromis in a 37 gallon). My fittest of the 3 lived for about a year and a half.

I guess its alright then. I have three in a 29 gallon and they dont fight any so maybe they will be alright. Ive read places that said to get them in groups that this was better...

yea, I also read the same thing, and its the reason I bought in a group myself. Since, I have seen a handful of threads where people posted the same problems of them killing each other off.

Maybe my friend and I were just unlucky

Most fish colors will fade in the dark or while they are sleeping. I had a Picasso triggerfish that would sleep so soundly that it would occasionally swim in its sleep. Eventually it would bump into something hard enough to wake it up, and the faded colors would almost immediately become vibrant again.

I have 2 in my 12g and they have established a pecking order, they get darker when they are hiding instead of pale, and are usually already in bed when I go to turn the light off.

Mine freak out too. Whats crazy though is they sit right infront of their "bed" when actinics come on. Then when they go off, they freak out for a min and then go to bed! They are a crazy species
