for what it's good for?

my brother in law gave me a bottle of melafix

that a good friend of him, that has a reef, send to me. being a 2month tank noobie, i have to ask for what it's good for?

is these for disease treatment, like in ich? it is good for dipping coral 3-5min, but how long for each sp. of coral? any insigth

pardon my grammer, really!
