new to keeping corals and need some advice
I went to a frag swap this weekend and picked up a few very small pieces. I got and orange digi, some type of Yuma (not sure of the name), a small (10 heads) of blue hornet zoas, 5 heads of nuclear green zoas, and pink and green polyp birds nest. Here are my current parameters:
Ammonia: 0 Nitrates: 5 Phosphate: .05 Calcium: 500 (little high now because I was trying to dial in my dosing and added a little much) Alkalinity: 2.9 PH: 8.3 equipment: 20 gallon standard tank (24L X 12W X 17T) Vertex protein skimmer (run at night since it is quite large for my system for about 8 hours) really like the water clarity though 250Watt phoenix 14K halide mag 7 return pump and MP10 (reef crest mode) for flow So.... none of the SPS have opened their polyps. the yuma looks super stressed and tight. It hasn't opened up and it seems as though it is detaching itself from the rock that I got it on. and the blue hornets haven't opened up much either. Although they have relaxed a little bit and aren't as tight together as they were yesterday. they seem to be extending but have yet to open up fully. I did an hour and a half drip acclimation and then followed that with a Brightwell coral dip which I did the recommended amount and time for each coral. I placed the SPS higher in the tank (about mid to high) with higher flow. zoas and ric are on the bottom in moderate to low flow areas. All the corals that I have were kept under 250 Watt Halides. I have thought of maybe moving some of them around and possibly changing the light schedule to help them maybe acclimate to the light? Or maybe the flow is too high? I'm not sure what is causing them to not open up but I'm hoping that it will clear itself up in a day or two. They have only been in there for three days. Any ideas for what is going on and maybe would be helpful thanks. |

I would say your on the right track... Acclimate them to the lighting and just keep an eye on the flow, maybe move things around a bit.
Alk could be a bit higher but is ok. What are you dosing? |

Alk - Is that ppm, meg/L or dkh?
Nitrate - Is that 5.0 or .5? Cal - 500 isn't all that bad, and it will come down. Keep doing as you are, if they don't open, move them to a different spot, and see if they are happier.
