FOWLR Tank

In a FOWLR tank is it generally better to go with a deeper tank or taller? I understand go as long as you can but if you are at max length but can go up or deeper which one?

Tks

Craig

i would say deeper as long as its not for really tall fish(seahorses, batfish, french/grey/annularis angels). A deeper tank is soo much easier to aquascape and will look alot more natural. Tall tanks look nice but are a pain to maintain. no one wants to get thier face wet reaching in a tank trying to get something from the bottom of the tank.

Deep is fine. I have a 110 FOWLR and it's quite deep. I'm over 6-feet tall and still, I have to get on a step-ladder once in a while to do some maintenance, though maintenance on a FOWLR isn't nearly as frequent as it is in my reef. I find the deep tank to be just fine for the FO, but remember that the smaller the surface area to the depth of the tank, the less oxygen exchange, so you have to be sure that you are providing the fish with sufficient oxygen. Having a sump with a skimmer (either wet or dry-plumbed) will assure that there is sufficient turbulence in the sump to oxygenate the water that is returned to the fishtank.

Honestly, just get as big as you can. Most of the fish that people buy for FOWLR tanks get bigger than your average reef tank fish. I know I wish I went bigger

overall, the bigger the better. if the choice is between a tall tank and a wide one with the same volume, i'd go for the wider one. fish utilize the length/width of a tank more than the height.
