Protein skimmer recommendations

Hey I need a skimmer for a 90gallon with 30gallon chaeto-fuge setup. Price is a big factor, but if its going to save water changes, I'm willing to pay upto 350 for a good one. Could you guys give me some recommendations on good brands.

Forums have mentioned Aqua C EV series, Remora skimmers.

How are coralife skimmers. They're pretty cheap and I have a positive image of the company from their light fixtures.

Look into Eshopps and Bubble Magus.

Stay away from the Coralife. I haven't heard much good about them.

The Aqua-Cs I hear are better. But from what I understand, the same amount of money could be better spent.

You can get an Eshopps PSK-200 rated for up to a 200g tank for around $200 or a comparable Bubble Magus for even a little less.

Thanks Tusca, the eshopps looks noticably better than the bubble magus. the eshopps uses a needle wheel which seems pretty good. I'm going to work off of this unless I hear different

200 doesn't sound like a bad price at all

Well, the Bubble Magus is awesome, too. That's what I have. My buddy has the Eshopps. We got them at the same time. I wanted him to get the BM, he wanted me to get an Eshopps. So we've been comparing them and the performance is basically identical.

The BM has a mesh wheel, which some people consider a step up from the needle. You can find the Eshopps with mesh, also. My buddy's has the mesh.

Also check out the BM NAC7. It's a cone skimmer which supposedly gives even better performance.

Either way, you won't go wrong.

Here's the link for the BM Owners' Club thread here on RC. It's how I fell in love with mine...

hmm well if air intake is any indication, the bubble magus has a air intake of 500 liters per hour which is pretty high compared to everything else. I'm told bubble size also matters but very few sites provides that. However by the same logic. the cheapest octopus extreme is pushing 1000 liters per hour of air. Cost is at 280

Funny you say that since Octopus would have been my next recommendation. They make some great skimmers.

From what I read in that thread the BM pulls more air per dollar than pretty much anything else. That's the whole idea behind them: performance comparable to a much higher-priced skimmer for considerably less money. In a lot of ways they're a knock-off of ones like the Deltec. Those companies did all the R&D and then BM rolls in and copies it. I'm not complaining or knocking them, I love mine. I appreciate it since it helps advance the technology and make it more available to everyone.

But, yeah, look into the Octopus...Octopi...Octopuses, also. That's what I was gonna go with until I got into the whole Bubble Magus thing.

I really like my SWC 200 xtreme, it has a big foot print at 9x14x21, but it does a good job your going to be looking closer to the 350 range with shipping but I love mine, and it produces so many bubbles you cant see through it. It does 350 on a light bio load and 150 on a heavy bio load.
