Starry Blenny - jumpers?
I recently set up a 25 gallon nano and the first fish I put in the tank was a starry blenny. The tank is actually at my girlfriends apartment. The blenny was doing great for a week or so, then we left one day, and when she got back, the blenny went carpet surfing . Are these fish known to be jumpers? I really liked this little guy, and would like to get her another one, but she's a little gun shy after the first one. Since then, I've placed some of that bird netting across the top of the tank.

Mine is a jumper. He like to sleep up on the frag rack and if startled he goes straight up. I have a screen covering the tankso he just splashes water around and ends up back in the tank.

Yes, they are known for being jumpers. They're very well known for jumping the same night they're introduced...lol.

well, i don't know about 'jumping' in the traditional sense but i did pick mine up off the carpet once after it launched itself up and off of the downspout of my hob filter trying to eat more of the algae that was growing there. i didn't actually witness the exit but i was close enough to hear the thud. aside from that i never saw any indication that the fish thought that exiting the water was a good plan. for the most part it liked to chill in the rockwork and bounce around from spot to spot. on top of powerheads was also a favorite perch. if it was scared from an aggressive fish while hanging out up there on a powerhead i could easily see it making the leap, but that's not exclusive to the starry blenny.
overall, i think most any fish *might* end up on the carpet at one point or another. having some kind of cover on the tank is always a good idea, imo.

Don't let it discourage you from getting another one!! I love starry blennies! They have sooo much personality!! I've owned 2 and they never attempted suicide, so your next one may not be as depressed

Mine jumped out the first night in the tank. Not sure why as it didn't leave a suicide note.

ive had 2 starry blennys, one very large and was in my tank for around 6 months but he was too aggressive so i had to take him out and now a small one ive had for 2 months.
when both were bagged, they both would try to jump out of the bag time after time. once settled in the tank though and made a spot in the rock to hide, they NEVER tried to jump. i had both with a decent sized open lid. both have been my 2 favorite fish! i just say keep a lid on until you know they are well aclimated to the tank, around a month, and 99%(100% based of expierience) of the time they will shoot to their burrow instead of out the tank.

My bicolor blenny doesn't seem like he has the swimming ability to get up enough speed to jump out. Awesome fish, but not a strong swimmer. I do have my tank covered due to a firefish though.

Got another one in the tank...hopefully this guy stays put. He seems to have picked the highest rock in the tank to use as home base.
