What if i want Grape Caulerpa?

I bought some of the stuff from the LFS just because i liked the look of it and wanted some more green in my tank. After a little reading on here, it seems to be a nusiance. My tank is a FOWLR and already has the some feather Caulerpa in it, which has not gotten out of hand. Is the grape going to take off much faster than the feather or do you think the general growth should be the same?

then get it. in a fowlr it wont be a nuisance, because no corals to crow out or anything. if you like it go for it.

Bringing this back up. It's a large tank (150gl). Would I still need to worry about it crashing the tank if i kept it trimmed. My nitrates are a little high and I would like to bring them down

just let it go, i have it in my tanks...if it starts getting out of hand either trim it, or get a type of tang or something that will eat it...my damsels loved to eat....something small like that could help you keep it in check if it starts getting out of hand...and since it has a good start of growing on it without the fish eating it all gone they should be able to eat it all before it grows out

Keep it trimmed and keep an eye on it every day. If you see it starting to turn clear, get that section out ASAP. If you're out of town a lot, I wouldn't recommend it unless you have someone you can trust keep an eye on it for you. I lost a tank to caulerpa going sexual over a weekend because my mom didn't pay attention when she fish/dog/cat sat for me. I have heard that tangs and rabbitfish will eat it, so I'd think that could help.

Hmmm. I am out of town from time to time. I really just like to look of it but it's not worth losing my 5 year old tank over... Any other cool vegetation / nitrate control suggestions?

Of all the caulerpa, the least problems I've had is from racemosa. Even in lower nutrient tanks it still seems to stay alive growing rapidly. Trim it back every so often and it will be fine. FOWLR tanks usually feed a lot so you should be good.

if you like the way it looks, but are still afraid... why dont you try the red version?? red macros dont grow as quickly, and seem to have a lot less problems with them...not exactly the same as it doesnt send off runners, so it doesnt spread as quickly...but you still have the small ball shapes on stems if that is the look you are wanting...only it is red
