Corals can hear?

Interesting article in the LA times.

Study links coral growth to sound

I was wondering what the effects of having home theatre sound within 3 feet of the tank is on corals and fish? I know water muffles and slows sound waves, but, do they have any negative impacts on fish or corals?

is it from the vibration that the sound causes? im sure sound waves boucing around in the tank must agitate stuff to cause extremely minute vibration

In the paper this morning it seemed that they were blaming "people" now for noise pollution as being the cause of the reefs decline.

Quote:
Many coral reefs worldwide have been dying, and Simpson pointed out that human activity in the ocean could be making enough noise to interfere with the baby coral’s ability to find safe places to settle.

It's actually the opposite. Sound travels about 4x faster in water than in the air.
