It's very hard to buffer freshwater, so really it's very difficult to match pH of the display. The most important part is that you match the temperature - can I ask why you want to do a FW dip? They really aren't too helpful, basically it can help a fish flush it's gills and digestive tract, but won't rid it of any parasites and such.

I know its stupid of me but I do not have a quarantine tank at the moment and plan on buying some new livestock soon. Just wondering if the freshwater dip would help reduce risk of any parasites like i have heard it does

Not really, it just helps relieve an effected fish. Most times the parasite will burrow into the gills or flesh at which point the mucus layer protects it. QT is the only sure way and really one can be set up for about the price of one good fish or frag.

Pretty sure there's some debate over the effectiveness of freshwater dips. Some say that they can be effective in removing parasites, and others don't.
It's said that the added stress from the freshwater dip can lead to further problems with the fish, but I haven't read any published studies to prove one way or another. Chris, do you have any support for your claims? I'd be interested in reading.

Skip the freshwater dip unless you are specifically trying to bring relief to a fish infested with some sort of parasite. Putting a saltwater fish in freshwater is the equivalent of someone putting you on the moon for 5 minutes without any oxygen. Its very stressful to a fish, add that to the stress of travel and a new environment and it could lead to negative results.
