Protein skimmer maintenance question.

I have a reef octo extreme 160 and I love it but I am having problems with the venturi clogging. The skimmer has a sicce 2500 pump with no mods. I have take the venturi off every few weeks and poke out the salt creep or else it overflows the cup. Is this normal? My cup runs to a drain so at some random time (after a week or as long as 2 months) it will pump 3-4 gallons of water out of the sump. I am going to put in a controller with floats to turn off the skimmer if the water level drops but I wish I could solve the venturi issue. I have read that some put hot ro/di water in the air intake. Does this work? How often? Any info would be great!

Where is the skimmer sitting? is it under a stand? Try getting it some fresh air. Sometimes the salty moist air under a stand can cause the venturi to clog early. I actually had to mount a small inlet fan in the back of my stand so it could breath underneath.

I pull my air hose off the silencer and let it suck up some warm water from a cup. I normally do this once a week. Let it pull in a little at a time and watch the level in your skimmer while doing this or you will flood your skimmer cup. Easy and simple way to keep your venturi clean

Protein skimmer maintenance question.

Thanks for the info!

Question...

Does anyone turn their skimmer off for say an hour or two once a week to redisolve the salt? Would that work if I put it on a timer?
