How to upgrade

I have a 55 g and i just bought a 65 rimless. i need to upgrade. i plan to use all of my rock and sand from my 55 and put it in the new tank and use alot of the same water. to do this i will take out all of the rockwork and coral and put it in a large rubbermaid bin. The fish will go in there too. Then i will transfer the sand. Wait for it to calm down then put in the rocks and corals...then fish. Is this the way it should be done...I need to do it this way because the new tank is going where the old tank is. Any suggestions/advise. Will i get a spike in ammonia/nitrates/nitrites when i move the sand? Its about 1.5 inches deep and unfortunately not really well mixed.

PLEASR ADVISE ME

From what I've heard its better to start with new sand and not reuse the old one. The stirring up that occurs releases trapped gas or something like that and can actually be worse than just starting off with new sand. Other than that i think you are going about the right way. I guess have some salt water set aside to do some water changes if you see any spikes in your parameters. Hopefully someone else can jump in and give some more help. Good luck.

I would use new sand and rinse it thoroughly. Once I had it in place I would then add a cup or two of the old sand as a seed for the new sand. Also be sure to aerate the water in the Rubbermaid bin and also use a heater to maintain the temperature. My guess is that the rock and livestock will be in there for quite some time while you wait for the sand to settle down.

It's alot easier than what your expecting. You just have to be patient and not panic if something happens and make sure you stick to your plan
