as long as:

1. the sump can handle the water volume in case of power outage
2. heater, skimmer, and other equip is rated to handle the volume increase
3. you need to cycle both tanks at same time
4. both tanks be infection/parasite free

basically your setting up a system like your LFS has. So yea id say it CAN be done with correct planing, and id probably try it if i had to also. Sounds like your LFS is trying to make some extra $ from you. Maybe its not "recommended" but to say it "CANT" be done is nieve imo.

i wouldnt do it personally. if you run into any problems in either of the tanks then you will end up having it in both tanks. it would probably just be simpler to just set up another sump.

I use 1 sump for everything. Biggest thing is to make sure you know at what level the water stops at so you don't cause a flood, and do a power shut off to make sure that when all the lines drain you don't overflow.
