How many tank cleaners per gallon?
I have a 90 gal s/w reef tank and am looking into stocking it with turbo snails and blue legged hermit crabs.
How many of each would be acceptable in a tank my size? Thanks! ![]()

there are several websites that sell pre-packaged tank cleaners by tank size. You should have a look at a few. Some RC Sponsors with them are Live Aquaria and Blue Zoo.
Even if you're not going to buy from them, it should give you an idea as to the quantity. |

I've heard it said that those packages are relatively large packages for the tank size. I agree it's a good starting point... I think a 80 - 100 snails for a 55g tank is a bit over kill.
I have at most half of that. |

Your CUC really depends on the specific needs of your tank. A good starting point would be 5 or 6 turbos, and about 60 hermits. If you have sand get some nassarius snails as well.

Start small and add as needed as algae and other things in need of cleaning appear.
Otherwise: lots of algae = large investment = really clean tank = not enough food for CUC = dead CUC = high nitrates = lots of algae.... (the process is circular) I also am not a hermit crab fan. They tend to kill/eat snails and are willing to hold out for days as the snail slowly starves to death just for its shell. To borrow an analogy I once read on this board (I think): Would you rather have a shiny new home or a shiny new home that was full of cheeseburgers?
