Flow for 10g nano
I've been getting a lot of opinions on flow for my 10g I'm building but I'm not sure which should be the best. I have a Penguin 150 filter in there now and have the availability of a 100 as well. I believe Jarred has had good success running both of those with out the bio wheel in them. I've also heard about those Koralia nano's. Someone also suggested two smaller pumps to create a cross flow. What do I really need? If anything at all

Really, HOB filters don't work. Most people turn them into fuges. However, I would go with 1 or 2 koralia nano 240's.

^^ I heard HOB filter's do work pretty well. Also you don't think those koralia will be way too strong?

Two Koralia nano's or one K1 will give you the flow you need. Two powerheads give you greater control of the flow; one powerhead looks less cluttered. Personal preference. |

The nano's say that theyre 240 gph, do I really need two of those? I feel like the corals would then have too much flow

2 nano should be ok, k2 would be perfect but its too big.

In my experience, one K Nano will not cut it in a 10g. You can always try it, and add another one later (when you get the first cyano bloom! ) |

A k nano in a 5.5 gallon isn't enough, you would need at least a k1 for a 10 gallon.

my 10g/I had a K nano with Aquaclear 70. Built my rock up, removed the K1 as my Blastos were getting too much flow. I rinse the AC70 sponge, and change out carbon monthly....water changes weekly....flow is good enough for my LPS. I did put back the N1 to try again- and if I added more rock...maybe it would be ok.
Best to try and see what works depending on your rock volume and corals. The AC70 gives me some nice flow to deflect and added water volume. All this from learning on this forum what works best for individual needs and adjust accordingly with trial and error. If I upgrade to a 15gallon in the future, I will add the N1 back most definately. |

on my 10 gallon i have 2 koralia nanos(240's), a HOB aquaclear 110, and a rio 90 powerhead. Im upgrading to a 20 high and will be getting only 1 vortech mp10 or mp20 with the aquaclear and a skimmer . If you can afford it get a vortech mp10 as others have suggested to me. I hate the look of all the powerheads and intakes and what not , it takes away from the tank.

As for flow you'll be fine with a Hob and may need to add a PH later on, basically look at your tank and see what it needs. |

How long you have been in this hobby is completely irrelevant, I have seen quiet a few people who have been in this hobby for 20+ years and still don't know jack. Oldreefer I really mean no disrespect, I just think you should explain yourself more. Take care and Happy Reefing. |

Thanks guys. I'm gonna roll with my filters for a bit and see if everything works. If I need to add one I will.

Actually ended up getting a different filter for reasons outside of my control, so I'll be getting a Koralia nano. I think the one that's rated 425 gph...It's only about 5 bucks more and you guys seem to say two small ones so, whatdya think?

I think I met you today at ARC? Nice to see you on the boards. Go with a Koralia 1.

For my 10 gallon, i've been using a HoB filter and a Knano that work just fine. Even SPS are happy with the flow so I'm not sure why people think a nano won't cut it.
Now, that may be getting upped soon, as I am adding a second tank for a fuge/sump which will have a 480GPH pump in each tank, as well as the K nano in the DT.
