What type of algae disappears at night???

My tank is covered with what looks like diatoms now... it's lost it's white/purple beauty and now it is nothing but brown... i'm not sure if it's diatoms or cyano... i have a small area of my tank with some purple stuff that i'm pretty sure is cyano, but the rest of my tank is covered with this diatom looking like stuff... the thing is that in all the tanks i've had before, diatoms do not disappear at night... with this stuff, it almost completely disappears at night but by the afternoon it's back in full force... just want to figure out what i'm dealing with.... Thanks!!!

sounds like dinos to me to, I get a light brown on a little sand and it gets better during the night and peaks before the lights shut off but no air bubbles or slimey look to it and my di resin went south so I know mine is diatoms

I remember reading that diatoms can bury themselves in the sand bed at night.
