Just purchased Octopus XP1000SSS skimmer. Question about size.

Is the Octopus XP1000SSS skimmer too much for a 40 gallon breeder with a 10 gallon sump? The manufacturer suggests it maxes out @ a 125 gallon tank.

I have done searches in RC and heard negative things about overskimming (especially when keeping a mixed tank with some softies) nutrients (I am not fond of nutrient poor SPS only tanks.) and also if the skimmer is TOO big for the tank, then skimming might not even occur (if the neck is too big and not enough organics etc)

This skimmer is very new on the market and my guess is that not many people here on RC have much experience with it.

With that being said, it's overkill for sure but would work well if you plan to heavily stock your aquarium. Have you considered a SWC 120 Cone? It would be a little more appropriate for your size tank and will save you a bit of money. JMO!

based on size and advertised specs it should work fine on a well stocked 40g breeder with plenty of head room. overskimming doesn't exist. oversizing does which doesn't result in more skimate (if it does its not oversized for your system). It takes more than a good skimmer to produce a low nutrient system. even if you by chance ended up with a low nutrient system without systematically trying to achieve one (via carbon source, combining low bioload with large water changes ect) its as easy as doing any of the following to reverse that: more fish, more food, smaller or less frequent water changes.

Tagging along - I just got one of these for my new 40G with 30G basement sump. I'm still setting everything but this does look like an excellent skimmer.

I'm planning to run a NP reactor so heavy skimming is good for that. Also, you don't have to run the skimmer all the time - you can cycle it on a timer to run a few hours a day. I tend to agree with those who say you can't really overskim.

Running a skimmer on a timer is a bad idea imo. Things could go wrong more than the benefit of saving electricity.

I agree about not trying to run the skimmer on a timer - especially when doing the NP reactor. However, I have seen some people on here say that if you are afraid of overskimmer you can turn the skimmer off for a period.
