Garage1217's 225G starphire / led / awesome build!

All right! Finally time to start my new build! This is very exciting for me. Over the last 2 weeks, I have been parting out my current system totally selling off most everything so I can start from scratch and build this over about a month or two period the way I want it done! In around 30-45 days, this system should be filled with water

My goals for this system....
- High energy efficiency / at or less than .03 cents per hour running cost at .11 cents per KWH
- Large water volume
- Lots of DIY projects
- Keep the build cost reasonable for this size tank

So to kick this off, here is the basic equipment list that is going into this system. Tank is ordered as well as many other items and many I already own
- 225G lee-mar trimless eurobrace tank / front 3 sides in starphire / overall very custom. Lots of options but will go into that when it arrives in 3-4 weeks
- Building a custom stand for the tank
- 5 custom LED lights I am building will cover the tank / 120 leds total / 360w of cree XR-E wickedness w/80 degree optics "more details on this custom light build below" This will feature sunset and sunrise dimming ability!
- 1 custom fuge light using 12 cree XR-E leds / no optics
- 1 custom QT tank light using 12 cree XR-E leds / no optics
- 4 koralia K4's "not koralia evos" modified with sureflow props blowing 1600+gph each.
- SRO-5000INT Super Reef Octopus skimmer with bubble blaster 5000 pump
- HY5000 Water blaster return pump
- Aquaclear 70 filter assembly for QT setup
- 4 qty 150W Jager heaters on a ranco single stage controller
- Korralin 1502 ca reactor / will have to upgrade once I start really stocking this large of a tank
- Milwaukee SMS 122 ph controller

I will have a LOT of pics coming soon as stuff is arriving slow, but first up! Some info on the lighting.
The display...

- will use 60 cool white cree XR-E Q5 - WE series leds
- 60 royal blue cree XR-E D3 series leds
- 80 degree optics
- 10 Meanwell ELN-60-48D
- Neptune systems aquacontroller with 0-10V outputs for sunrise - sunset dimming of the ELN-60-48D's
- Heatsinks are being ordered from heatsink USA and will be custom anodized black. They will be put together VERY nice & look professional.
- Airflow through the heatsinks will be provided by a pair per LED pad of Kaze Jyu SLIM SY1012SL12M 100mm pc fans / 10 total. They are super thin and quiet / flow just the right about of air.
- Thermal control of the 5qty of 24 led pads will be provided by an NZXT Sentry 5 channel fan controller / temp monitor

The fuge....

- will use 2 LPC-35-700W, one for the fuge light and one for the QT light
- The fuge will use 12 cool white cree XR-E Q5 - WE series leds
- The QT system will use 6 royal blue cree XR-E D3 series leds / 12 cool white cree XR-E Q5 - WE series leds
- Heatsinks are being ordered from heatsink USA and will be custom anodized black. They will be put together VERY nice & look professional.
- Will be on simple on/off timers / most likely controlled by the aquacontroller

Now, rather than the normal electrical cab, I am doing something a little different. I am using an ATX mid tower PC case for the electronics!

I started by purchasing a nice all black PC case "thermal take v3 black edition" which I picked up for dirt cheap. I gutted out the hard drive section of the case as it will house all of the meanwells, fan controller and so forth! Will be a tight fit but the fan cooling will keep temps in check.

Here is the case....

Here is a side view so you can see what I gutted. Had to cut off the rivet heads to remove this section.

Here is a pic of my case after I gutted the hard drive section for more room.

The next pics are of the NZXT Sentry 5 channel fan controller / temp monitor. This will allow me to monitor all 5 of the display led heatsinks temp wise and will provide ramping up and down of fans as needed to keep temps in check! It also provides a nice user definable temp alarm in case something goes wrong. You can see it mounted in my case here...

Well that covers it for tonight. As stuff comes in I will be documenting everything and taking LOTS of photos!

More progress today!
- Heatsinks ordered and paid for thanks to heatsinkusa.com
- All 10 meanwell ELN-60-48-D supplies have been ordered / best price I found was from cdiweb.com at around $27ea shipped
- Ordered in two LPC-35-700W from rapidled.com, best price I found at around $19ea shipped
- For reliability sake, the 12V power supply which will run the fans, cooler and other items I went with an industrial type supply from circuitspecialists.com which is local to me. Picking it up monday / HengFu Dual Output 5V/12V Switching Power Supply (HF100W-DF-A) $39.99. I thought about using a PC power supply but they just so not seem to build them like they used to. So many out of the box or short life failures it is crazy.

Well that covers it for today. Been out shopping for tile as I want to tile the kitchen before I start setting up the tank and stand. Now that I am home, have to start designing the stand itself.

Wow....definitely in for this build! Great plans man.

Question for you....

I am using the ELN-60-48P's. What would you suggest for me in order to create dimming for sunrise and sunset? I've been searching everywhere for a good answer! haha I currently have a Aquacontroller jr. but will upgrade if necessary.

What's my best approach in your opinion? And sorry, this will be my only highjacking haha

Well the P type take a PWM signal so not sure what people are using for off the shelf controllers for those / all I have seen are DIY custom controllers. The D series take straight DC which the Apex will provide.

Looks like an amazing start for your new tank! I think you'll be happy with the starphire Lee Mar tank.

When you're planning your stand, be sure that it's tall enough to easily get your skimmer into and out of your sump for cleaning. That's the big annoyance with my stand.

Thanks for the advice And yeah, this stand will be 36" tall so will have no clearance issues.

Updates:

Wowsers I blew some cash today. Ordered in...
- SRO-5000INT skimmer / uses a bubble blaster 5000 pump. Quite a beasty!

- Also ordered in the neptune systems apex which will handle a lot more than just dimming for me, but not all critical functions as I do not trust any all in one controller to handle every critical system

And last, ordered in another pair of 150W heaters for a total of 4 / 2 more koralia k4's and sureflow prop kits for them "love my modified k4's!!!!

Some stuff arrived....
All 10 of my 48D meanwells have arrived as well as the 700w's. Pretty much covers it for now.

Skimmer arrived and it is a BEAST! HUGE compared to my msx200 which was no small toy skimmer. Powered by a BB5000 woot! Love my waterblaster 5000 so this as a natural choice.

Specs...
Item #: SRO-5000INT Super Reef Octopus® 10” In Sump Skimmer RO-PS-5000INT Dimensions: 18”x12”x24” Rated up to 400gal. Features the new Bubble Blaster HY5000S High quality machine welded cast acrylic construction

*LOL* well the vast majority of what is on the table would not be sold at petco haha. But yeah, starting to feel like a fish store. Still have TONS more equipment inbound.

Why not the Super Octo XP 5000 cone? It is even more of a beast! Best skimmer I ever owned, Tagging along as I like the low power angle of your build after my bill shot over 300.00 per month running similar size tank.

Because the cone is $125 more online in general and the one I chose already has a cone neck up a good potion of the body / above the bubble plate. I think cones are nice, just cannot justify the price for the small gain "if any"

And for power savings, I documented a TON of my changes and so forth with my old system long ago in this thread....

What wattage iron are you using to solder those led kits? I have a 25 watt and I was wondering if that was gonna be enough juice to do it.
