Almost have very quiet tank - ball valve on drain noise makes noise
It's funny that the durso overflow is deadsilient, no sound comes from up there...but under the tank to the sump, the water flowing through the 1.5" ball valve makes alot of noise as it passes though, before heading through the final flex tubing into the 1st sump chamber. Just a lot of water turbulence noise, and I'm wondering if I should just get rid of it...but like having the ability to stop the drain when I turn the power off to service things. Are gate valves quieter? Or should I just run straight from the bulkhead down into the sump to stop that water rushing noise?

A gate valve will be quieter but expensive. But hey if that gets rid of your last bit of water noise it might be worth it.

I got rid of my valves and rely on a calculated drain-down when the pump shuts off. Even a gate valve is going to make a little noise.

Do you have the ball valve partially closed? If not, I don't understand how it adds extra noise. Are you sure the noise is coming from the valve? Sounds like it could be noise from the entire overflow, not just the valve.

I can put my ear right next to my drain line, and hear all the gurgling coming right out of the big 1.5" ball valve, like water is very turbulent inside there. Even with it closed partially, it's still noisy. There isn't any noise oddly enough in the durso pipe until it reaches the ball valve underneath the bulkhead. I also get some secondary noise from the water coming down the last of the drain pipe, but it's not as noisy as the ball valve. Looking inside the valve, it appears to be pass through, but there is narrowing of the valve inside it' body and some junction points in there with the male adapter since everything is threaded.
Maybe if I look at some slip fittings everything will be smooth and won't get that noise because there won't be any turbulence...and since the 1st sump chamber is straight down below my bulkhead, in a way I already have a reverse durso in my sump return |

Thought I'd post some resolution I achieved through trial and error if someone else is having the same problem. Using all 1.5" parts, no matter what I tried I still got alot of gurgling noise, even without the ball valve. It made a bunch of noise rushing through the bulkhead.
So instead I got a 1.5" to 3/4" threaded bushing at Lowe's, and then ran 3/4 drain line down to the sump. That really quieted the whooshing water noise through the bulkhead to nothing. But down in the sump water the outlet was fairly noisy even though it was underwater. So put a ball valve at the end to adjust the water outlet, and that quieted that down. This setup works for me cause I'm not trying to drain a whole lot per hour, 300 gph max and the 3/4 drain can handle that easily. |
