Tek Question
Hello Everyone,
I just purchased the Tek 60 inch 8 bulb 80 watt fixture to put on my tank. I will be using the brackets that attach to my tank and the fixture to mount it instead of using wires drilled into my ceiling. I wanted to know since this model does not include cooling fans, will I need to put a clip on fan on my tank to cool the water? I do not use one right now on my Nova Extreme Pro, but it has cooling fans built in. If I do need to use one, can I have it blowing on my sump out of sight of the DT or would it need to be attached to the DT? My Nova is about 3 inches above the water line, and the Tek looks like it will be a bit higher than this. Thanks in advance for your help, Robert |

Maybe-maybe not...is it in canopy or open air? Open air likely no you wouldn't need fan. I use a fan on sump and have found it to be effective(I also use t5 with mh you may need fan on tank).
The effect of the fan on the unit is not so much to cool around the tank, rather to cool the fixture. You get slightly better performance from a fixture with fans as well as longer bulb life by cooling. |

Don't use the acrylic shield and keep the fixture at least 4 inches off the water, if not higher if you can. Then add an external fan blowing on the fixture, not the bulbs directly. You will get roughly a 20% increase in PAR and bulb life will last about 12 months instead of 7 or 8 months.

Just keep the light at least 4 to 5 inches off the water. The heat should be minimal. Also...you could try a conduit diy light hanger...I love mine and it looks cool.

My 8 bulb TEK fixture is about 4" over the water with the tank brackets. No fans and the fixture is just barely warm to the touch. I run a fan over my sump to cool the water and nothing over the display except the TEK.
