herbie drain question

for a herbie drain do you need a gate valve on the backup drain or just on the main drain?

+1 on valve on just the main drain. Emergency drain is 100% open. This is the "failsafe" part of the design.

FYI i just used a ball valve, once set I never have to adjust (running 2.5 yrs). Main drain in the center (2 returns on each side) with emergency drain on the left.

also my tank has 2 1" drains and 2 3/4" returns, i will be using 2 1260 return pumps. should i use all 4 holes for drains (2 herbie drains) and run the returns over the back or can i us the 2 3/4" holes as returns. im not sure how much water the drains will be able to handle.
thanks

Sorry to bump this, but I would like to do exactly this. Two 1" holes as drains, the two 3/4" holes as returns.

Did it work out for you?
