What type of algae is this? (Pics Inside)
what type of algae is in my tank? or different types, I'm trying to get a positive ID so I can read about it and go about removing it properly and efficiently...
Also if you have suggestions on removing it, let me know! its too short and too hard to remove by hand, i tried.... I have since I noticed it order a BRS Reactor and am running Carbon and GFO, I have a skimmer skimming wet, tank is a 40 Breeder, 6x39W T5 lights, paramaters are in check and all corals (including SPS) are doing excellent. Here is 1 shot with no flash, and the rest with flash: Thanks for looking! |

Hair alage for sure. You have high nitrates and phosphates. The test kit won't read any because the algae is absorbing them. Reduce feeding and photoperiod.

looks pretty hairy to me too. there are some short turflike green algae like Cladiella(i think) but none of those pics are sharp enough to get down and dirty with the ID.

Looks like green turf alage to me. I have it as well but not in a large mat like that. I had a flame tail blenny that ripped it off the rocks and ate it but unfortunately the blenny also decided he liked acans as well. My mexican turbos and tuxedo urchin are currently keeping it in check but its still exists in small patches here and there. My phosphates and nitrates are non-detect. I only have 2 fish in a 40 breeder and do weekly 20% WC's and it's still there. Honestly though it does not bother me in it's current state and it seems to be a constant food source for thr urchin. I have read sea hares will eat it as well. Obvioiusly, something that eats it doesn't solve the problem but so far I have not been able to find a solution so I am doing what I can.

Bryopsis can look like feather caulerpa. Just depends what type you have. That looks like hair algae to me in the OP pic.
http://www.hawaii.edu/reefalgae/inva...is_pennata.htm "Broypsis pennata forms soft, feathery clumps attached to basalt rocks and rubble on shallow reef flats, in tidepools, and in lower intertidal habitats of coastlines with low wave action. " |
