It's a serial cable I take it? Very few modern motherboards have a serial plug these days. You can buy a Serial to USB adapter at most electronics stores.

ever heard of google.com ? first thing I'd have done to research it and what it can do:
www.google.com. Here: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=aquacontroller+jr.

c'mon guys. Sometimes you need to do some of your own research

You do not need the DC8 for the unit to function. You can purchase the X10 modules and control all sorts of things like pumps, skimmer, fans, etc.

x10 modules are single versions of the DC8. IMO the DC8 is worth buying.

you can get x10 modules from ebay cheap, but dc8 is better even if it costs a little more.

Not sure that I would describe them as a single version of the DC8. The DC8 is a direct connection between the controller and your equipment. The X10 module is a wireless connection. I used the X10's for years without issue until I finally got a DC8 and a DC4. The main reason for my switch was that the clicking noise from the X10 modules turning on and off were driving me crazy. I believe that Radio shack also carries the X10 modules. All that being said, you would probably spend less money on the DC8 then you would buying a number of X10's. Obviously a hard wired setup will be more reliable then a wireless one.

DC8 is well worth the $$ over x10s. You can get a used DC8 for about $100 shipped if you keep your eyes open.
