Help with deciding return pump for eshopps 300 overflow box
It will be on a 40 breeder and a 20L sump. Probably about 3.5 feet of head. I know eheim pumps are some of the best but $100 is more then i had hoped to spend. Any personal experiences with the mag 3 or quiet one 1200? The overflow is rated for 300 max and I was planning on using a durso or gurgle buster to quiet the overflow.
Any input or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks! |

I have used a mag 3 and 9.5. Both pumps never gave me any issues after years of use. I abused the heck out of my 3 and it kept going strong. They do heat the water quite a bit though.

The MagDrive pumps are workhorses and you cannot go wrong with them for the money but if it were me I would not size strictly for the overflow box. Step up to a Mag5 and install a bleed-off valve on your return plumbing that is directed back to your sump, that way if you need to up the flow a bit you can close the valve and on the flip side if you need to get less flow just crank the valve open a bit.

Running the same overflow on my 55 and a Rio 2100 return pump. Has about 4 ft of head and works wonderfully.

My return pump is one of the least expensive items in my setup. I have two ViaAqua 2300 pumps (one running, one spare). The one that's running has been in use almost 2 years, with no issues. The spare is brand new, I just like to have a spare for emergencies. I paid less than $30 for each one. Mine's been used with an Eshopps 300 overflow and currently a Lifereef Nano (400gph). I have a 46/20 system with about 3 1/2 feet of head using 3/4" vinyl tubing from pump to tank. I use a ball valve to dial it back slightly.
At this price point, IMHO they're hard to beat. I have researched the Eheim's, Sicce's, and other more expensive pumps, but with the 2300 working so well, I've put my money into AI Sol's, Warner Marine skimmer, and Vortech pumps. There are better pumps out there no doubt, but with my experience, I've decided to stick with what I've got for now. |
