Equipment needed during cycling
If I decide to go ahead with my aquarium do I need to have a protein skimmer and lights running while the tank is cycling? The tank will be near a window that produces a lot of light during that time.

No, but once you get a decent light on the tank, you may experience some sort of algae bloom.

all that is needed in your tank during cycling is at least one powerhead to keep water moving, a heater and an ammonia source such as a raw shrimp or live rock to start the cycle.
