Diatom Bloom
Hey,
My tank is relatively new. It's a 55 gallon aquarium that has been cycling with 50 lbs of live rock... 25 more pounds are coming tomorrow. Anyway, my question is should I keep the lights on during the day to get through the diatom bloom? Or should I leave them off? When I leave the lights off, the diatoms seem to be dying, but when I turn the lights back on, the diatom is back in full force. Thanks for any help! Water parameters: PH 8.2 Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 5 ppm |

I keep mine off until i get a CUC sufficent enough to handle the problem, which your gonna need one anyways cause theres the most defanate algae bloom that follows..

Just leave the lights on they are a normal part of the cycle and they will go away.

How old is your tank? If your tank is only a few weeks old then yes, you want it to go through it's cycle. If your tank is months old leave the lights off for 3 or 4 days and it will go away completely. I just had to deal with that a few weeks ago.
