Best MSX or Octo Skimmer for 200g system?
I've spent an entire day reading about MSX and Reef Octopus skimmers and still don't think I have a handle on all the options and what the best choice is.
I run about a 190g system now and might upgrade that to 250g at some point in the next year. Medium bioload. Basement sump setup so room and noise or no concern. I liked the idea of the MSX-200 skimmer but concerned it might be rated for a smaller system than mine (true?), and also I can't find one to buy anyway. The new MSX-250a is about $200 more and is all I can find. This might even be overkill. The Reef Octopus skimmers are basically the same thing, as I understand it- but a different pin wheel. And I don't know (but care to know) if I should run in-sump or external. Does the recirculating skimmer add much more? Even though I have the basic skimmer in mind, I can't figure out which I should get. I do have to say that the older special from Marine Systems for the MSX-200 at $279 shipped would have made me order in a minute. |

I know the new MX 250a is "better" than the older MX 250, but enough "better" that everyone who ones the 250 should go out and buy the 250a? I'm trying to decide if the decent-sized price difference (even used) is worth the different pump.

I have used both and can say I think you are mistaken. The BB pumps are awesome though. For this tank I would go with a SRO-3000 model or step up to a SWC 250a if you want to go bigger.

Right now I'm only between the two- msx-250 and msx-250a. Sounds like I should go with 250a then?

Askolls have been time tested and BB have not, how can the BB be better when its only been around for about a year...... Only time will tell that the BB can't hang with the askolls
