AquaC Remora Pro or CPR BAK-PAK™ 2R+ ?
So I've recently picked up a 47g Column tank which will be my first foray into saltwater. I've been researching everything for a long time now, but the one thing I can't find a straight answer on is skimmers. I won't be running a sump so I need a HOT/HOB design, and since the tank is in my living room it needs to be quiet as well as effective and easy to use. My tank will be a lightly stocked "natural method" tank. My budget for the skimmer is about $200-300 tops.
Full planned stocklist here: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=1902475 I know there will still be divergent oppinions on which skimmer is best, but any input is helpful. Thanks in advance Last edited by deutsche20V; 09/09/2010 at 10:19 PM. |

I have a Remora nano and it skims really well on my nano. I can only imagine how a bigger one with a mag 3 would do.

replace the CPR bak pak 2r+ with the CPR aero force.
i just got done trying both and promptly returned the 2r+ as it was pretty weak even after the break in period. Thank goodness I was able to clean it up and return it to a very liberal return policy store. the aero force works much much better and I would recommend it to others if you can buy it for less then 175 easy. as for the aquac.. i have owned that in the past and was immediately disqualified for being loud even with the paper towel mod to shut it up. you may want to tell others what the top end of your budget is so we do not recommend HOB skimmers that cost too much. If money was no object i would have probably tried out other brands but I wanted to keep this smaller tank of mine on a tight budget. |

I'd go with an internal Tunze. Much quieter than either of the two listed, and even though it has a bigger in tank footprint, it's presence is IMO much much less as it's a very hideable black body that doesn't show up in a black backed tank, and definitley much less so than a big powerhead or mag-drive pump sitting in the tank.
Add to that you get the performance of an in-sump skimmer, and a top-line one at that, and very much my thoughts. Not too too pricey, but possibly a little higher than your budget? |

I have the 2r+ on a 44gal cornertank. The tank is feed very heavy, and the 2r+ is skimming all the time. It had a kind of long break in period, and I found that almost every two or three days I have to clear the intake screen on the powerhead or it slows down and does not skim. It overall has been a great little skimmer though, I would recommend it. I have never used the other models that you ask about, so no real feedback there.

Thanks for the input everyone! I've done a bit more research into some of the skimmers mentioned and I'm liking the Aquamaxx the best so far. From the reviews I've read it is dead quiet, which is a big plus to me, works well and it looks almost as good as the remora. To top it off the price is low enough that even if I do decide to upgrade later its not a huge financial loss.
