Which brand water pump???

I'm looking to upgrade my mag 5 water pump that runs my 55 gal tank. Need suggestions
- what brand
- inside sump pump
- quiet if possible
- around 100
- and last something that will be enough to work with 75 gal. (will upgrade soon to that size)
Thanks

This is the pump that I use on my 75. Also this tank is in my bed room and next to my bed.

If you want a pump that will last forever get a Eheim pump. Over time it pays for itself. If you were running 2 return pumps I would get 3 Via Agua pumps. This option let you swap out for maintenance and saves the upfront cost. You also end up with a pool of spare parts the help keep upkeep cost down.

My favorite setup is a 75 with a mag12 and a SQWD flow switcher. The pump by itself is too much but with the SQWD chocking some flow it is perfect.

The one thing I dont like about Mag pumps is that over time the cover bolt threads tend to get stripped and become a problem. If I were to buy a new pump today I would look at a Quiet one pump. The design keeps the shaft from clogging with calcium from what I have read and it has a 1" outlet for plumbing.

Rio HF pumps are the quietest and the most efficient.

Rio HF17 -- 55w, 1090gph@1', 840gph@4', $60.
Mag 9.5 -- 93w, 950gph@0', 800gph@4', $100.
Eheim 1260 --65w, 635gph, N/A, $165.

Mag pumps are barbaric relics of a bygone era. Ridiculously noisy, ridiculously inefficient (read: hot), and not really designed to be serviced easily (compared to other submersibles; theoretically they can be pumbed externally, but...)

Both the Mag-Drive pumps and the Eheims are decades-old designs. Eheims have a reputation for being reliable, but IMO most water pumps are pretty reliable when they are operated and maintained properly. What you're really paying for is somebody's cushy pension and the cost of importation.

Just my two cents.

I have to agree. I was hesitant to buy one of the Rio HF pumps but put one in my lagoon for some extra flow at one end. The pump ran like a champ. I accidentally sent a bunch of sand through it and it never missed a beat. They are very efficient and inexpensive.

Ive used a few models of HF pumps and they all ran like champs..... GREAT pumps for the money.

I'm now using a Tunze Silence return pump and LOVE it.... its a little more than the $100 mark, but its a Tunze so you know its rock solid and itll have the best customer service ever attached to it if you ever need it....

Theres also a reason they named it the Silence, the pump is the quietest Ive ever heard.

The Eheim is a bit more expensive, but it is silent. SILENT. And it will outlive the others mentioned here. It will long, long outlive any Mag without putting as much heat into your tank. It will outlive any Via Aqua. I have to believe it will outlive a Rio.

The Tunze may be as good. So, too, may those cool looking new Maxijet pumps.
