sand depth for jawfish

I want to get a jawfish eventually and was wondering if 2" of sand would be ok for him

They'll be okay in 2, but they will be happier in 3+. Make sure there is a good amount of rubble available and that any rocks are in the tank before the sand so they can't tunnel underneath and get themselves trapped or flattened as the rock settles. They will likely choose a rock to tunnel beneath and then line the entrance with rubble.

Ok cool maybe I'll also grab a couple bags of reef substrate that has some shells in it for them to play with

The more the better. Sand caves in on itself. They need something that they can stack. Anything the size of a pencil eraser up to an inch or so if it is light like a shell or coral skeleton.

Cool fish. Mine will bring over shells and rubble to cover his hole.

I would prop up the rocks on split pieces of pvc that are buried in the sand.

You have probably already read to make sure your tank is covered. When I owned a BSJfish I used a pvc home. I read about it on another fourm, basicly you use 4 90 elbows and a T to make a square with a entrance in one side. I just burried it in the sand and piled rubble near the entrance. It worked in a shallow sand bed. William
