Need advice on my tank
I am having a real tough time here. The tank is going up against the support wall in my town house on the second floor. The support beams where the tank would go, are parallel to the tank. I wanted to do a FO tank, with only live rock in the sump I can get away with it.
I am considering a 48x24x17 starfire tank from glasscages. it would be 95g get like a 20g sump and I cant see that being an issue with weight. For the same cost I could do a a 48x24x24 120g regular tank from perfecto. the problem is I am worried about that extra weight. and that I think that the glass cage tank would look better. Any advice would be great! |

The differences in weight should not be enought to be a problem.

Welcome to Reef Central! You don't give enough details on the construction to answer. If it's a support wall, the joists should be perpendicular to the wall. Or are you putting the short end of the tank against the wall? How old of construction are you talking? The difference in weight is insignificant, but it is possible that both are too heavy!

My house is brand new, built in 2009. The wall is exterior wall of my house, but its a town house, so still an interior wall.

If the tank is parallel to the supporting wall, you will have at least 3 (4 if you place it exactly right) 2x10s (or12s) running under the tank. Either tank will be fine on the second floor. I prefer the height of a 120 over a 95, but either is fine.

You'll be fine. our house was just build in Feb and we can put up to a 150g tank without having to support the floor. as long as the boards are running perpendicular to the tank you'll be fine. you don't want then parallel with each other. if you're worried you could nail some extra wood in the basement.
