live rock from hawaii
so my dad just came back from hawaii yesterday and brought me what looks like a pice of live rock... well its not live now but looks like it was live at some point... when he gave me it, it was all dried up so right now i got it in a bucket with some tank water and a power head. you think it will grow bacteria and i can put it in my tank? if so how long you think it will take or is it safe to go in now?
thanks |

When I went to Maui with my wife a few years ago I told her I HAD to bring back some live rock. I took about 10lbs back with me in a zip lock container with sea water in it. I was flipping out when we went through the x-rays at the airport thinking I was going to get busted. Got home, the live rock made it all the way home in the containers with sea water. Even had a little bit of coral on it. To bad I tore my tank down and lost it some place. But it will become live again. Clean it off and throw it in the tank!

I wouldn't put it in until you test for zero ammonia and zero nitrites in the bucket you are keeping it in. Many tanks have been nuked by putting uncured rock in.

wow i have heard of the tang police but never the rock police lol
if you already have live rock in your tank and the rock is clean so there isent any dead stuff on it i would add it to my tank.

Florida has "rock police" also named FWC and the regulations are about as bad.

If the OP father took it from dry land he is fine. Poster #2 admitted guilt on a public forum. What is going on right now in Hawaii will effect this whole hobby. IF Bob wins this is the the beginning of the end for everyone. |

+1 snorkel bob is a great big doucher. We dont need to give him any more ammo.
To OP let it sit in your bucket for a week or so with a powerhead and give it a WC or 2 then rinse and chuck it in, BTW whats hawaii rock look like?

Yeah I know. But Hey, I was from out of state, I didn't know. Plus TSA didn't do nothing when it was going through the X-Ray Machine. Don't think they could have missed it.. But it was TSA So who know. Nice piece of rock! Don't think you have to worry about anything if it was DEAD and out of the water for awhile. I'm sure what ever had died off is gone. Just give it a nice scrub and rinse. I put mine right in with no ill effect. |

Get with your local reef group and work WITH them to get FWC and DOACS regulations adapted to the hobbyist. Posting nonsense here just works against the rest of us. Jeff |

Found a really cool looking chunk of very large shell on a gulf coast beach that shall remain nameless. Left it high and dry on the windowsill in full daylight for a couple of months. My son finally thought it was safe to put into his 90 gallon mixed reef tank. Within weeks the entire tank was covered in what can only be described as "alien penis algae" Little green phalluses everywhere! It's been a year and he's still trying to get it under control.
Moral of the story: cook unknown live rock.

jeff, This is not nonsense but fact that the FWC busted my cousin south of St. Pete because besides the alloted snails that he collected he grabed a piece of rock also. The kicker is they fined him,for collecting Live Rock but it was bare of life just had a neat shape. Also I am not trying to stir things up so unless you know me PLEASE do not accuse me of doing so.
