QT - How much flow?

Hi guys/gals,

I have a QT setup and notice that there seems to be a lot of dead spots.

I have an extra korelia (sp) 4 and was wondering if a K4 in a 20L would be too much flow.

I tried it, but and the fish seems to be swimming around with a little difficulty, HAHA.

thanks for a response.

In a QT, you really dont need much flow. When mine was setup, the HOB filter i used was enough. Its a QT, not a reef Hope that helps, Wiz

You only have to keep the fish in there for 4-6 weeks. The only flow you need is whatever comes with your filter.

okay, thanks. I guess it makes siphoning the poop out easier.

maybe a small DIY skimmer made from a coke bottle and air stone would be nice.

I prefer to have a small powehead in there to keep good surface aggitation so I don't have PH problems. maybe it's overkill, i dunno

Flow from the HOB filter is fine as long as it's a fish-only QT. Or are you quarantining corals in there too?

Good idea, actually.

I'd prefer the power head for good o2 exchange to a filter. In saltwater unless you run it 365 you wont have a bacteria load to consume the waste.

I prefer to set up the tank as needed with tank water from a water change) and a rock or two to sacrifice to the QT. I keep rocks in my sump anyway.

Well I have a HOB filter rated for a 55G on my 20G Long. The surface aggitation is pretty good, so a powerhead for that purpose would not be necessary I guess.

I just though it would need more water movement.

I would say some type of powerhead pointed towards the surface is best. I currently have a tang in QT that has been going through the hyposalinity treatment

Make sure to let the biological media of your HOB sit in the sump for a week or so for it to get seeded with bacteria. I have bioballs for a cannister sit in my sump. Makes life so much easier in QT if you have that filter biological and active.

I have a sponge that has been sitting in the DT for about 8 weeks. So the bacteria is good. I have been testing the water each day, and all numbers are good.
