drilling glass... i has ?'s...
i'm starting another project... no not a reef... i'm setting up a 45g tall as a vivarium... either for some crested geckos, or maybe a giant day gecko... even though i think day geckos are stupid lizards... they are pretty and well, they won't mind some rain or fog in the tank a couple of hours a day...
so i need a drain under the false floor... so i want to drill a small hole, like half inch or maybe one inch... but whatever... something i could put a small bulkhead on and it will drain to a sump for the rain system... with a filter sock and stuff... anyways... will drilling a small hole like that be easier than putting a bigger whole on another tank..? this tank has thick glass for some reason... i guess 'cause it's so tall... but... where can i take it...? or do they sell glass hole cutters that small like at harbor garbage...¿¿¿ or even small bulkheads...? also... where on the tank can i make hole...? it would be perfect on the bottom, but i'm not sure if it's tempered or not... i think it might be... or how low on the tank can i go..? um... i dunno... whatever... thx... |

If it was meant to be a fish tank then it's probably tempered on the bottom. As for cutting the holes I had another reefer with a glass cutter do mine. The hole saws for glass are not cheap but if u go that route here is what he did.
Mark where u want the hole then about a half inch aroun that create a dam with clay in a circle. Fill it with water and drill. U want the blade spinning fast but no pressure on the glass (don't push) Let the blade do all the work Good luck

You can find glass bits on ebay from sellers in Hong Kong that are supper cheap and work extremely well. I just got 3 bits from one seller for $25 shipped total. When drilling I found that rocking the drill in a very very slight circular motion helped speed up the process. For a small hole like you are talking yocan use a decent speed but as you get to bigger bits you actually want to use slower speeds from what I have read. My drill is not super fast and it worked great. The holes are smooth and you can run your finger on them with no worries of getting cut.
If the glass on the bottom is very thick then it very well may not be tempered. There are plenty of tanks that are not tempered on the bottom but they use thicker glass. Companies use tempered so that they can use thinner glass. |

You can get smaller glass drill-bits from Home depot pretty cheap. i know bc back in my college days I drilled out a 3ft tall chianti (wine) bottle to make a uh... Lamp.
Just go VERY slow... As long as your glass isn't tempered that is.

so... can i use any of these dudes...?
http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...atalogId=10053 if i can, i'll go RIGHT NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!... (for some reason i feel very tim and erik today...) that one "apache" one is 1/2" but it really doesn't matter... i might not need a bulkhead, i will just silicone some hose on the back of the tank... it's not going to be high flow, or with a lot of pressure... what do you guys think...? |

I just ment you needed to use a diamond hole saw, not that size.
You could try the other bits, but they only have a carbide tip compared to diamond. At work I cut carbide with diamond, so I know diamond is MUCH stronger than carbide. and yes 5/16" (.3125) is smaller than 1/2" (.5000) by almost half....

Nope, I work in Rancho Cucamonga. My family owns and operates a precision plastic injection molding company, so I deal with cutting hardened steel to very accurate dimensions.
We use diamond grinding wheels to grind carbide cutters to whatever we need to get the job done. We do work for microsoft, bose, oakley, and recently we have gotten more into the medical field (syringes, urine meters, etc....) Basically anything plastic, we make the metal mold for it. Heck, even my wedding ring is Tungston Carbide
