New tank set up question
Hello Everyone,
I am new to the forum and somewhat new to saltwater aquarium owning. I have done fresh and brackish water in the past but never salt. So I am very excited to get this tank going. I have a 30 gallon square shaped tank with an eclipse bio wheel filter sytem. I have been told that I should get a protein skimmer in addition to what is already in the hood. The type of tank I want to keep is a white sand substrate with some live rock to make a cave for an eel. I want to put a -Snowflake eel -Flame Angel -Orange Tail fiji puffer -Medium sized Clownfish or some other fish( if anyone could recommend a cool blue colored fish) That group isnt set in stone but thats basically what i want to have. So my questions are -What kind of protein skimmer should i get, or is there something better(keep in mind I dont want to do a sump) -I want to get some nice blue tinted lights to go in the tank, is that harder to put in to the hood? -how long does it take to get ready to put live fish in. I know in freshwater it was around a month getting the ecosystem ready with starter fish. -How much will it take me to get from empty tank to housed with fish? Thanks in advance for all the help. |

Well a new tank has to cycle. That process can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months or better it all depends on a number of variables. How cured the rock is where it came from the same for your sand amongst other things. I hate to burst your bubble but a snowflake should get too large for a 30 cube. Not to mention there's a good shot it can eat the angel. And although I'm not familiar with that puffer most get quite large very quickly. Were talking larger than a football. There are definately people here more qualified than I to give a definate answer on the fish capatabilty. But I would definately do a lot of reasearch before you just dive in

The eel will be quite a bit cramped in such an environment, and be more likely to snatch your other fish (its not an if, its a when). Do you have a species name on the puffer?
Without a sump, you're stuck with a HOB (hang on back) skimmer, which there is a much smaller choice. I'd look into the Reef Octopus HOB line. The cycle time depends a lot on the source of live rock and how it was transported.

Does this 30 gallon cube have a top on it? Eels are known to be carpet surfers. That is too many fish to have in a 30 gallon tank. If this is the enclosed hood eclipse system you'll probably have to modify the hood to get a hob skimmer. Reef octopus or Tunze for your skimmers. Since you're fish only just get some actinc bulbs of any type and it'll be blue
