RC has a few vendors, I can't speak for any particular brand, as I bought mine off of ebay for $100 (6 stage) And has worked fine since the day I bought it.
Some things to keep in mind is to get one that has common size filters (10" cartridges) so that you're not stuck having to buy them from the specific vendor, a lot of the filters can be purchased at HD or Lowes. And make sure that the one you purchase can support your tank size. If you have a 300 gallon tank, you don’t want to buy a 25 gallon per day RODI unit. And finally some come with bells and whistles that are not necessary but may help you, such as TDS meters in line, so you can read what the TDS is going into the RO what it is coming out if the RO and/or what it is coming out of the DI. Some units have ports that you can have a valve in between the RO and DI so that you can drain off the first gallon to save the life of your DI, or use it for drinking water, or simply for a TDS test port. They are not necessary but you may want them for your ease of mind. HTH

Hmm i think i have it narrowed down to either the Typhoon III or the build your own from BRS. Thanks for all your input.

With that kind of money to spend on an RO/DI unit you could alsmost get the top of the line one at BRS. With buit in TDS meter, pressure gage, Filter condition screen, dual di resin. All the bells and whistles.

I got one off Ebay for alot less, quality construction and looks like all the others, and has storage tank too...love it so far, it cranks out 0 TDS water like all the others. From my research I noticed the basic RO unit and housings are basically the same exact thing regardless of brand. What makes the difference is better filters, better RO membranes, accessories that you want, and design of DI you go with.

I agree on the owners/install manual part but the quality of there stuff and service was nice!!! But mine wouldnt fit into your budget OP becuse i needed the booster pump.. becuse of low and i mean low water pressure.. but now with the 150gpd i get about 6gal per hour di water out of it.. at 75psi..

You won't be sorry with the BRS. Easy installation and zero TDS water as expected.
Although not BRS's fault, I had to get the booster pump, because my main water pressure was too low (34 psi). The booster pump almost doubled my water pressure (67 psi). I then decided to upgrade to the 150 gpd (around $59) and am waiting to receive the shipment today. |

Why do you want 5 stages? Stick with 4 unless you are trying to treat some odd water quality issue like heavy sediment loads, or chloramine.

The 4-stage BRS system is $129.99. I got the 5-stage plus not just for the extra stage, but also for the other extra stuff: dual TDS meters, flow meter, flush kit, auto-shut-off valve, and pressure gauge. |
