New coral
Hey just got my first coral ever. Ya I been in the hobby for about 6 years on and off because of the military. Any who its a toadstool mushroom. I was just wondering if its normal for it to be hiding its polyps a little bit for a couple of days. I have it in moderate flow and my lights a 8 t-5 each 54w in a 55 gallon tank. People kept telling me i can keep pretty much anything. And i did some research and the toadstool uses light more than taking in food on its own.

I just got my first coal too after a year of having my tank. Got a few small mushrooms, Sun Poly coral, Starburst colony, and a button colony. All but the sun has come out. Good luck to us both!

Yes, a lot of coral don't open for several days as they adapt to their new surroundings. Did you light acclimate it? If the coral came from an lfs with significantly less light than yours, or if it was shipped, you will have to put it low in the tank and cut your light period down, then slowly move it up to it's final position over the course of several days and go back to your previous light period.

Yeah it's quite normal for it to not have full polyp extension. Mine will sit closed up a couple days at a time. Your lighting is plenty.

The lfs told me to have it at mid level than move it up after a few days. I told them about my lighting so everything sounds great than thank you for calming my nerves.

Don' be worried at all, toadstools may stay closed for over a week at first then they will shed thier skin and will come back out. If it has trouble shedding its skin then you will need to give it more water flow.
