Which GFCI do I need?

I'm looking to install a GFCI outlet where there is currently just a regular one. I'm wondering what I need to know about that outlet, if anything, to choose the correct GFCI outlet. I've seen some outlets that are 20 amps while others are 15, some are rated at 125 volts while other at 120. I'm not really sure what these numbers mean for an outlet, and I don't want to make the wrong purchase. Thanks.

15 amp is what you need. And 125v is what its rated for even if it says 120v. Its the same thing, 125v just gives a few volts error as you almost never have exactly 120v.

Turn the breaker off to the plug before replacing, and read the instructions, if you do not feel confident that you can hook it up correctly then call an electrician as an improperly connected GFCI will not function as a GFCI.

So if I bought the 20 amp one it wouldn't work? Doesn't this increase capacity?

Match it to the circuit that outlet sits on. Most are 15A
