Round white spots on rock and glass
I have Texas Holy Rock, live sand and some live rock. I noticed white round spots appearing on the Texas Holy Rock. Then I noticed they started appearing on the front glass, along with hard algae spots. If I scrape them with an algae scraper they all come off. Any idea what the white spots are?
I'll try to post a photo unless someone knows offhand. |

It's a type of snail if I recall. If it's the small (1mm) size and round, I believe it's not an issue. The elongated spiral kind - pyramidellid snails - is another story; it's a pest and must be removed.
Hopefully, better answers will show up.

Have you added any snails to your tank? Nerite snail eggs look like small white sesame seeds on the rocks and glass. There's a picture in this link.

Ah, that's the name I was looking for. Good find on the picture!
Yes, these are harmless and easy to scrape off which then become food for CUC

I do have a nerite snail, and the spots look a lot like the pics in the article about nerite eggs. I guess I'll keep an eye on it and see. The tank has had a bunch of snails all along and about 2 months ago I put in a new piece of live rock. So maybe it came from that. Either way, I haven't noticed the tank being overrun by snails. The spiral thing and the worm sounds scary though. Will keep an eye on it, now I know what to look for to help identify.
Thanks! |
