Yes, use RO/DI water. Using tap water will add pollutants to the tank, starting you off on the wrong foot. You could waste months fighting preventable issues with algae growth and other issues.

Depends. If you don't mind initial algae/diatom blooms, and your water has nothing too bad in it (The bad stuff: lead, copper, extremely high or low pH etc.) you should be relatively OK, but I would definitively test your water first. Hence, unless your tank is huge, and your RODI is really small, go with the RODI. It'll save you time.

I agree 100%. I just filled my first tank and it's a 180g and my RO/DI is 75gpd as well. Took a few days but it's all good Why take unnecessary risk....

What is RO/DI??? I have to start my 55 gal saltwater tank over as I lost all my fish today. So I wanted to see what that was - thanks in advance.

Reverse Osmosis is a process where water is forced, usually by the pressure in your mains, through a semi-permeable membrane to filter the water you use to top off and do water changes on your tank. It is rated by membrane type, Thin Film Composite (TFC) being the best. RO filters usually include pre-filters, to save your fairly expensive membranes. De-Ionization is a 2nd stage filter that can be placed after the RO membrane for even purer water, usually reserved for reef tanks. The filters are also rated by gallons per day (GPD), and the size you need depends on how big your tank is. I purchase my RODI supplies from Bulk Reef Supply which is an excellent place. Hope this helps!

I hope you got a refillable cartrage on your DI i do and i bought a 4lb mixed resien bag for 25bux from air water and ice got a discount for ordering it with a typhoon III not plugging the company but it last me a good while when i see the tds creep up.. I am also thinking about adding a second DI chamber to have lab quality water.. I have some pretty high tds in my input water.. and running my booster pump at 75 psi seems make my straight ro go up even though its a 150gpd 98% rejection membrain.. suposedly... if not im gunna get 2 75s that are for sure..
