Possible to put chaeto in rubbermaid in sump?

Trying to set up the most simple of refugiums...I don't have space in my sump for it's own dedicated chamber but I was thinking of putting it near the return and filter socks in a rubbermaid container drilled, with a light above it. Will this work?

Trying to get nitrates under control. What kind of barrier do you need for this stuff so it doesn't get to the skimmer/return pump/main tank?

My skimmer and chaeto sit in the same chamber in my sump. My return pump has a mesh shield to prevent entry of debris. That's about it.

I've seen plenty of people who use rubbermaids or plastic horse troughs as sumps. No reason that you need a fancy glass box for something that just holds water and some equipment.

All you need is some sort of barrier to keep the main ball from getting sucked into the pumps. A little bit loose here and there isn't going to hurt because your return pump will shred it. Also unlike other macroalgaes it won't become invasive in your display tank.

Eggcrate is used by a lot of people for this kind of barrier. Cut it so it fits snug and it doesn't even have to be adhered.

If you intend to submerge any type of tub in your sump make sure it doesn't float before drilling it full of holes .
