new 30 gallon FO set up???

Ok, I am not new to this (14 years of having a 75 gallon salt) BUT I keep it very simple and inexpensive so I consider myself new and always learning. Anyway, when planning to move/downsize, I had my 1st crazy insane crash and lost my fish, and dead little bristley worms everywhere. I plan on starting all over!!! I had 2 1/2" live sand and a lot of live rock. Scrapping the new canister filter I was going to use. What bottom should I put down? The old sand was 14 years old, full of worms and deemed toxic What would you use for setting up fish only, basic, somewhat easy up-keep????

I would say either bare bottom or 2-3 inches of aragonite sand. I would also scrap the canister, and add a descent protein skimmer to keep the water clean. I'd also most likely run carbon. Outside of this the FO system on tank this size should be rather simple really.

I would probably go with a 1" sandbed in a fish only tank. Not the real fine stuff either, something that's a little bit larger in diameter. With this you can just use a powerhead and pretty much turn your entire sandbed over right before a water change. Very easy to keep clean.

Do you plan on sand-sifting fish or burrowing fish? If so, the substrate requirements change.
