as far as fish you have options, id stay with peacfull, active fish.
a pygmy angel
royal granma
gobies
blennys
small wrasses- my possum wrasse is one of my favorite fish
as far as inverts, stay away from lobsters of anykind. i had a purple wipe out my fish population.
skunk cleaners are very cool
coral banded too but watch out when they get big, ive heard of them eating sleeping fish
pepermints are fun for kids to watch when you feed the tank.

hope this helps a bit

C. scottorum is highly aggressive and not recommended. A CBB is a difficult fish and not for a newbie. Most tangs would not do well in that sized tank.

It's easier to give better suggestions if you tell us more about what you like and don't like in fish including color, behavior, territory, etc. Good luck.

this is going to be a reef, I would of liked a pistol/goby pair but idk how that would work out with a bare bottom, also same with wrasses, I like the flasher family and leopards but i have heard they are hard to keep. Also I think the kids would love clown fish but, I find them quite annoying (always picking on others) I like my small school green chromis until they started to kill each other. mandarins are a absolutely beautifully fish, But with all ive heard about how hard they are to keep im a little spooked. So, I would like a type of interesting/ worker fish, a active swimming fish, a very pretty fish, possibly a school of something? and possibly a fish that just kinda hangs out. I dont think i want a tang as ive heard a 4' long tank is to long to let them feel free.

Ive had a reef tank for 3 1/2 years, just wanna hear my options.

A pistol/goby pair is an amazing addition. It is so cool to seem them together. Just curious, why aren't you putting sand in?

Royal grammas are cool fish, they usually swim around rocks sideways or upside down, which is fun.

Clowns are very stereotypical reef go-to fishes, but they do have some fun quirks. I love to watch them twitch. Ever thought about buying a different style? Maybe black or picasso?

I love gobies/blennies. I want a jawfish- but you'd need sand- but they are jumpers. Also I think some inverts are fun. Urchins or starfish.

I'd also recommend doing with your kids what I did with my roommate and girlfriend. Take them to the LFS, knowing you're not taking anything home. Ask them what they like, and look it up together to see what would be viable.

??? The wrass is Peaceful . Where do you get the info its agressive ?? And you can get Cbb From liveaquaria that are all eating mysid.

Lastly not all tangs need alot of room. Wild caught ya mabey but anything thats been in a LFS for a period of time would be happyer than hell to get in a 75.

I still go for The wrasses There cool fish that look like a swiming painting.

Well it sounds like you've been around long enough to have seen a few standard nemo+dory tanks, and such.... so maybe something a little different?

If you want interesting behavior, hardy, and color for the kids, you could go with a semiaggressive reef:
pair of flameback angels
trio of yellowfin fairy wrasses
pair of maroon clowns
pair of orchid dottybacks
purple tang
yellow sailfin blenny

No sand = No leopards.

What's your favorite fish that can live happily in your size tank? Then go from there.

I get my information from having owned:

Fairy Wrasses:

Adornatus
Bathyphilus
Earlei
Johnsoni
Jordani
Katherinae
Laboutei
Lineatus
Pylei (aggressive)
Rhomboidalis
Rosefascia (very aggressive)
Rubrisquamis
Scottorum (very aggressive)
Pintail

Flasher Wrasses

Carpenteri
Filamentosus
Mccoskeri
Rubricaudalis

So, how long have you had your Scott's fairy wrasse? A CBB from Live Aquaria is still a difficult fish despite its eating mysis. How long have you kept yours? And finally most tangs are marginal in a 75 gallon tank. Read the list of tangs and their requirements prepared by Scott Michael which is being updated at the moment as it is 15 years old.

Avoid tangs in a 75g.

Perculas are generally NOT aggressive, but other clowns can be, especially Maroons and tomatoes.

Jawfish (and some gobies and wrasses) need at least a 3 inch sand-bed and deeper for some species.

If it's a reef you probably want to avoid angels unless you're willing to have the corals take some damage. Leathers and shrooms should be okay, but LPS are fair game.

There are plenty of inverts that are good in 75g tank. Blood/fire shrimp, pistol shrimp, porcelin crabs, abalone, numerous snails, certain hermit crabs, feather dusters, yellow cucumbers and several species of macro algae such as titan, dragans breath and ochode (spelling wrong).

Pairing firefish is risky business. If it's not a male/female pair you may end up with only 1 fish!

My current 75g stocking list consists of:
purple firefish
red firefish (just happen to work, though the purple picks on the fire someitmes)
percula clown
royal gramma
tailspot blenny
banggai cardinal

I also have feather dusters, an abalone, blue sponge, tunicates, peppermint and skunk cleaner shrimp and a brittle star. And, of course, a lot of corals!

I wouldn't put filter feeders in a new tank.

Id say you could put a mandarin in the 75. it would have to be setup with alot of liverock for a while( around six months to get the copepod population up). also cant have any fish that are going to compete for copepods with the mandarin, and every once and a while it would be a good thing to add live copepods from a LFS....or skip all the hard stuff and get a ORA tank bred mandarin

How long have you had your ORA tank bred mandarin? Up until that recommendation, you were going along just fine.

im all the way with tank bread but i dont think that every fish will be the same, just because they were born in a small enclosed environment. a purple fire fish, lawnmower blenny, a true percula clown pair, and 3 wrasses. sound good?
