Not sure of the name but they come out of Florida and the Caribbean. They are shallow water so they need some light. I had a couple for awhile but they never settled in. I got mine during the great freeze in Southern Florida last year so I chocked it up to that . Best of luck they are very cool.

Thanks. I just found the name, but not too much info on it.

Callyspongia vaginalis

I hope it does well.

one very important thing to remember:

sponges are not corals

Yeah, but some people like to post threads here regarding sponges, tunicates, fire corals, etc. because many of these species rely on feeding instead of deriving energy from light, just like non-photosynthetic corals. Most of the people who have setup tanks to care for non-photo corals post in this forum, and not in the generic "Invertebrates" forum. They are the ones that people are seeking advice from, so I think we can forgive them this.

Seriously, did you actually think you were adding to the discussion?

I don't frequent this forum so yes. Prior to this post I would have never searched this forum for info on sponges, tunicates (filter feeding non coral invertebrates) etc.

A large majority of reefkeepers posting on RC mistake sponges for corals.
A sponge ID thread would make more sense in the 'Other Invertebrates' forum or even 'General Reef Discussion'.
I apologize for interrupting this thread.

No problem. I just wanted to post a new purchase. I know that a sponge is not a coral, but it is non photosynthetic, and does require feedings. I would love to see more ID threads with all NPS corals and inverts(sponges, anemone, etc).

I got these from my LFS Reefraft. He brought this in for me. I could frag it but I'm sure shipping to the US. I'm sure some LFS can bring it in.
