40 breeder stocking list
I'm wrapping up the construction phase of a new 40br build and the time has come to get serious about picking some livestock. I will probably end up with a soft coral reef as they are the easiest to keep and I have no experience. The tank will have a 29g sump with a vertex IN-80 skimmer, mag7 return, 10g refugium, 175watt MH, 2x Koralia 750, So far my list is as follows:
Fish Pair of Ocellaris Clowns Yellow shrimp goby/Pistol shrimp pair Chalk Bass 1-2 Firefish Inverts Crocea Clam various shrimp that aren't a coral banded Cuc 5-6 hermits 5-6 astrae 5-6 nassarius 1 turbo If anyone has suggestions or modifications I am more than happy to hear them. The stuff I want most is the clam, the clowns, and the goby/shrimp pair in that order. I'd really like a Coral Beauty Angel but I am afraid of space constraints and possible coral nipping down the road as I transition to soft coral. Another thing that sits in the back of my mind is some sort of biotope setup instead of just picking and choosing random fish and coral. However, I need someone to point at a few basic setups that would fit to see if any interest me. Thanks |

If what you really want is the clam I would skip the Coral Beauty. You should look into Fairy and Flasher wrasses. I just got a carpenter's flasher wrasse for my 40 a few weeks ago and he is always out in the open.

You might want to think about a lawmower or black sailfin blenny. They are cool fish and good cleaners.

Probably the same reason I didn't: PetCo didn't have 50 breeders on sale for a dollar a gallon.
My other issue is that the 50 adds two inches for light to penetrate, but very little in the way of extra capacity when you think about it. Jeff |

Depending on the size of the fish, you are probably pushing the limits of bio-load with six fish. Add them slowly, one by one, and watch your parameters, as well as the algae growth in the tank. I have a 54 corner with five fish in it. When I added the fifth, the amount of maintenance and algae increased fairly noticeably.

Anyone else have opinions on this list? I really want to get this right the first time and not have to worry about trying to return fish.
