Replacing Chemi-Pure Elite 175-200 gal bag??
I bought a large jar of Chemi-Pure Elite that has 4 "units" of filter material for tanks from 175-200 gallons. I have a 120 gallon DT & about 30-50 gallons in the sump. I wasn't told that TOO much Chemi-Pure Elite is bad, so I dumped the large bag flat into the bottom of my Wet-Dry. Yes, I know that not having a fuge in the sump is bad, so don't comment on that. The store said that bag is good for 4-6 months. I know everyone's setup is different. I have about 10 fish, 3 gorgonians, 3 long tentcle Nems and JUST got a Colt Coral on Sat Friday and a rock (6 inches in diamter) with 4-5 different mushroom corals.
My question: How long should I wait to replace it? My question isn't so much about how long the extra material will last in a 150 gallon setup, but how long are the bags supposed to last?

Lots of equipment left over from the 140 gallon tank teardown. Oct 21st was a sad day. Wife said I would have to get a new wife to get a new tank. I'm sure gonna miss the wife. Current Tank Info: No tank, no fish, no coral :( |

They say they last around 4-6 months. I find that abit of a stretch. I run my chemi for about 2 months.
I would say 2-3 then replace. It all depends on the system and waste and what not in it. I shoot for 2-3

I would guess that the bag will last for about a month or so. After that, it likely will be clogged with bacteria, and not function.
If you want to save some money, you could buy activated carbon and GFO separately. The Chemi-Pure Elite has some resins, which don't work in saltwater, and other than that, it's just activated carbon and GFO, which can be bought more cheaply separately.

GFO = Granular Ferric Oxide
its used to remove phosphates in yer system. people often run it in a reactor, sometimes in line with a carbon reactor.
