Start and Stop skimmer

Has anyone ever started and stopped the skimmer on a timer? I wonder if it really make a difference to stop it at night and then have it start again in the am.

If anyone can help or offer a suggestion let me know.

I use to do it on my bed room tank so it would turn the Skimmer off at 10pm and on at 10 am. Was only done to reduce noise so I could sleep. I went skimmerless on that tank over half a year ago.

What is the reason for u wanting to turn your Skimmer off? I don't see a reason other than noise level.

I've been turning ours off in the living room for a cpl hours a night....b/c of noise level.

The setup at my wife's office is too loud for her to work so she turns the skimmer off during the day, and on when she leaves for the day. I asked a friend what he thought about this and his only concern was if the neck was drying out too much, it may take too long to efficiently produce "tasty" gak. He suggested that if the cup wasn't very full ea. day try only running for the weekends. I'm going to try it out.

The noise is the only reason for me to do it. It sits on a wall that is next to the 8 month old room. I figured it wouldn't be a problem seeing that its a g2 on a 40g tank. Getting plenty of skimming done during the day.

if the noise is bothersome turn the skimmer off

start and stop skimming isn't good for a reef aquarium but people are more important than aquariums.

what's making the noise?
there are methods to help silence a skimmer so you can keep it running.

While I don't think that turning the skimmer off for a few hours each night would have a negative impact on the livestock, I wouldn't recommend doing it with your ASM G2. Based on my [limited] experience with ASM skimmers, the impeller tends to seize up at times when restarting. I would worry that doing it constantly may cause permanent damage. Just my opinion.
